Photographers for Brighton Fashion Week.

We are pleased to let everyone know that we are the Official Photographers for Brighton Fashion Week and last week Kevin shot the images that will be used throughout the promo campaign.

We can’t show you the actual images yet, but you can see the set that emerged via Kevins Storyboard and M.Halls excellent Set Direction and you can also read a little bit about the shoot on this link. We are really happy with the shoot, Kevin was given complete creative control and has tried to brand BFW over 4 images that can be read seperately or as a narrative, the whole shoot was completed in one day by Kevin and Natasha Alipour-Faridani, working with a fantastic model from Storm Georgina Bevan, and great make up by Jez Eaton, with some outfits (which we cant reveal yet) by Emma Sandham-King. Keep checking in and the images will hopefully be up here soon.

Reflections on Photography - a Unique Collection

Third year photography students of the University of Brighton’s BA hons course have gathered hand written and signed statements from leading photographers.

These statements, on postcards of the photographers choice are responses to the question:-

‘What have you learned being a photographer ?”

These postcards will be auctioned in March to help fund their 2010 degree show, and will be viewable at the Crane Kalman gallery before and after the auction on  Wednesday the 24th of March.

Talk and Portrait Workshops by Lou O'Bedlam

We are very pleased to let you know that we have booked LA based photographer Lou O’Bedlam to fly over to the UK and teach some workshops at Garage Studios as well as giving a talk about his work.

Lou’s Blog

The weekend workshops, Saturday 15th May are almost entirely sold out now, although if you can book and pay at the same time you may be able to secure a place- there may also be some cancellations but Lou has a lot of followers of his work and you will have to be quick. However due to demand we have now added an extra date for Monday 17th May.

lou o bedlam 1
Lou is running the Workshop which will be approx 4 hours, as a Portrait Masterclass, and will be talking and shooting, (we will provide some models for him) explaining his technique, his core interests as a photographer, and how he interacts with his models and is able to capture such beautifully simple but engaging images. He will look at how specific cameras force him to work differently with his subject, and how his unique way of looking at light allows him to ‘see’ a model. We have had to expand the usual number of students to keep up with demand for this workshop, but there will be time for you to shoot (if you wish) with a model with some tuition from Lou, or you can just attend and learn by watching and listening to him work. Lou will also talk about how to get your work seen, and how to capture your audience, through online and print presence.

This is a unique opportunity, and one that we are extremely pleased to be able to hold at Garage Studios, and it is our first attempt to bring in a photographer from outside of the UK exclusively to teach for us. We are offering the workshops at a special price.

4 hr workshop Full Price £33
Student (ID) £25
(ex Garage Students £30)

There will also be a talk on the Friday Night 14th May with a nominal fee £4 where Lou will show some of his favourite work and tell some of his classic stories. Again you will need to book in advance for this talk.

To book a place please contact us direct via email, we can accept Cash/Cheque or Bacs transfer, hopefully we will be able to squeeze you onto the course. Don’t miss out on this one…

The first Holga & Diana Camera Workshop

A few weeks ago we ran our first Holga & Diana Camera Workshop at Garage Studios. The day was a great success, the course was over subscribed but it was great fun going out and shooting with all the students around Brighton.

The Holga & Diana Camera Workshop is aimed at helping people understand their Holga & Diana Cameras, and to get them to shoot better shots with the cameras. So if you’ve got one of these great cameras and want to know how to get the best out of them, click here to find out more about the workshop.

Here are few pictures from some of the students taken on the first course:

Short Video from a Recent Fashion Shoot

This is a little video from a recent shoot for GangUp Magazine, a side-project fashion magazine from Kevin Mason that we are heavily involved in the production of. Tom Chambers who has previously made some great videos for us whilst interning here as apart of his course at University of Brighton, shot all the footage and Kevin threw together a little edit.

We are trying not to give too much away about the final shots, as the Magazine is due for release soon- but this was all using natural light, in a location Kevin has been itching to shoot in for about 5 years- but has apparently never found the right reason. The Stylist Emma Sandham-King (who still hasnt set up her tumblr blog- so cant show you the ideas behind the shoot…sheesh…) came up with the concept for this shoot. We went to check out the location two days before, clear any obvious needles and broken bottles out the way, and check the lighting for mid afternoon.

On the day of the shoot, as is always our luck, the Fire Escape and Alleyway was full of workmen, servicing some air-con units, which meant we were a bit cramped for space, but allowed the model to get changed in an open Fire Door. Its certainly not all glamour in the world of our fashion shoots, and to make things worse it was freezing cold, a real numb your fingers day- and of course we were only shooting leotards… Click this link to see a pic on my blog (its safe for work)
